Summary/Abstract: The exchange of correspondence between Ladislav Štoll and Oleg Sus was found in the former’s personal papers. These provide not only a unique insight into the relations between these two diametrically opposed figures in Czech culture, a Marxist-Leninist ideologue and politician on the one hand and a structuralist-leaning researcher with a Renaissance range of interests, as well as symbolically one of the most important cases of a confrontation between reform efforts and the dogmatic official doctine, which led to the revival process known as the Prague Spring, resulting eventually in “normalization”. The changes in their relationship and its conclusion are a perfect reflection of the period politics and the cultural atmosphere.
