Summary/Abstract: The objective of the article is to analyse and attempt to assess the public support for innovation of companies during a potential economic crisis. The adopted study methodology consists in quality study based primarily on questionnaires for representatives of the SME sector in Poland, whose answers were subjected to a detailed analysis. The study confirmed the hypothesis adopted in the text that along with a threat of economic crisis, the entrepreneurs’ expectations with respect to the public aid for innovation grow. Determination of the factors that are conducive to and limiting the conduct of innovation activity by Polish micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, apart from theoretical aspects, also offers a broad practical dimension. Results and conclusions may provide an incentive for evaluation or correction of economic programmes on the regional and national level.
