Summary/Abstract: Szeged-born János Kass’s animated film titled Dilemma (1980), inspired by Imre Madách’s masterpiece Az ember tragédiája (The Tragedy of Man), although somewhat forgotten, is nevertheless praised in the history of film being the first European computer-animated film, consisting of over a thousand frames drawn by Kass. The message sent by this artwork is very topical these days, and its pronounced intermediality and philosophical criticism of culture have a powerful influence. The study views this short film exceptional in genre and uniqueness in Kass’s oeuvre; it presents its intermediality, esthetic quality, symbols and openness; it elaborates the Madach inspiration within comparison, and interpreting its timeliness it reviews it within the framework of contemporary scientific and technical progress.
