Summary/Abstract: The decision to leave the family ‘nest’ is one of the criteria defining ‘adultness’. The moment of leaving is an important indicator illustrating not only the changes in modern families, but also the transformations of norms and values that occur in society as a whole. As children grow up, their attitudes towards the moment of leaving home are formed during socialization, and mostly within the framework of the family. Plans related to future careers and procreation have a direct impact on these attitudes, although the content of these plans depends on the values one subscribes to. Changes in the structure of these values are the ultimate reason for delaying the decision to become independent. Consent for the late emancipation of youth is becoming common in many postmodern societies, including in Poland.
