Summary/Abstract: One of the developmental tasks imposed by early adulthood is autonomy expressed through residing outside of the family home. This step is often delayed, and its postponement is increasingly common among young adults—who are not tackling the tasks of life that are consistent with adulthood as perceived in scientific terms: they are not taking jobs or are leaving them because of unsatisfactory earnings, and they are not moving out of the family home. Factors favouring such choices include the psychological and emotional immaturity of young people as well as the economic conditions making it difficult to get off to a start in adulthood. Sometimes the choice to stay at home is made by the young adults themselves. Frustrated by the lack of jobs and prospects, they are abandoning their dreams of independence, and making do with the role of ‘non-adult adults’. The article attempts to present the situation of young people aged 25–34, who generally tend to take important life decisions at this point in life, using selected countries as examples.
