Summary/Abstract: The appointment of Péter Pázmány as archbishop of Esztergom (1616) has long been in the focus of Hungarian historiography. The Hungarian Jesuit being famous already in his lifetime was nevertheless not exempt from gossips questioning his person. An example of such rumors is showed by the source that has survived in the Jesuit collection of the Library of the Royal Academy of History (Biblioteca de la Real Academia de Historia) in Madrid, among the manuscripts of Rafael Pereyra SJ (1594–1650). The erudite Jesuit of Sevilla facing information of dubious faith having originated from the Jesuit house of Olmütz after the death of Pázmány, asked for guidance in this matter of one of the most renowned Spanish theologians of the age, Cardinal Juan de Lugo SJ (1583–1660) working as a professor of the Collegio Romano between 1621 and 1642. In his answer, Cardinal Lugo refuted the rumors. The source provides a valuable insight into Jesuit attitudes towards the person of Pázmány at the time of his death and thereafter. It is an indication of his importance that the Order did not stop to be concerned with him after his death and regarded him as its member.
