Summary/Abstract: The relationship between these two outstanding figures of 16th century Hungarian history has long been in the focus of historical scholarship, and the resulting attention have generated diverging views of the issue. In the present paper I examine the reasons why István Illésházy, a magnate living in exile, joined the camp of István Bocskai, leader of an anti-Habsburg revolt, and the role he played there in the second half of 1605. Illésházy emerged as perhaps the most important councilor of the prince, and his letters repeatedly refer to an issue that was to become a crucial point in Bocskai’s future political testament.
