Summary/Abstract: This article reviews recent literature concerning how hospital care routines can be furthered through the carrying out of big data analytics. Using data from American Hospital Association, Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO, Health Data Management, Health IT Dashboard, Health Populi, and Statista, I performed analyses and made estimates regarding the relationship between digital health and data analytics, the global digital health market, and U.S. hospital adoption of patient engagement functionalities (online capabilities incentivized by federal policy). Empirical and secondary data are used to support the claims that hospitals have greatly increased patients’ online access to their health information, and that big data and analytics staff are the hardest to find in health care.
