Summary/Abstract: Above the main door of the inner portal of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice there is a 16th century mosaic of St Mark in episcopal robes. This figure has been considered an invention of the mosaicists who renovated this part of the church during the Renaissance, when the Medieval decorations were changed. Nevertheless, after reconsidering local ideology, the inscription above the mosaic and the function of this part of the church, it is possible to demonstrate that this mosaic was renovated conserving the previous iconography, respecting the original decorative plan of the portal.
