Summary/Abstract: While there are quite a lot Hungarians at the forefront of the avant-garde, in photography and the movie industry (most of them émigrés), visual arts have proverbially been somewhat neglected in Hungary. And not only in the last fifty years. Excellent poets all around, a wide appreciation of fine poetry, outstanding photographers far and wide—and much visual illiteracy, blatant, rampant bad taste, even in Budapest.
