Summary/Abstract: The most recent cultural history of Central and Eastern Europe is often locked in a dualist stereotype: a horror story of an oppressed, brainwashed cultural desert and the success story of heroic intellectuals and artists in opposition. The recent restructuring of the administrative and institutional background of everyday cultural life still remains in the shadow of “more important” analyses of transitions in the banking system or heavy industry. Freedom for Publishing/Publishing for Freedom attempts to bridge this gap. Timothy Garton Ash, the well-known observer of late Communist and post-Communist Europe, served as editor; Ralf Dahrendorf, one of the most distinguished post-war social thinkers, provides an introduction to these reflections on the activities of the Central and East European Publishing Project. The second part of the volume is devoted to Richard Davy’s report and to suggestions concerning the post-1989 problems of publishing in the “Visegrád countries.”
