Summary/Abstract: The article is a survey about the recent developments in early modern diplomatic history, based on the examples coming from the 17th-century Habsburg embassy in Constantinople. The first section discusses the innovative ques-tions raised by “new diplomatic history”, specifically those of micro-politics and diplomatic networks, symbolic communication and the possible application of perspectives coming from gender in the analysis of sources related to diplomacy. The mediality of diplomatic communication, that reality is not only represented, but also constructed by the ways and forms of communication, also receive attention here. In the second section, two important tasks of future research on diplomatic history are discussed: the question of interculturality and the conclusions it can offer for historical peace research (historische Friedensforschung).
