Summary/Abstract: The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (Taketori monogatari) is the oldest fantastic narrative in Japan, created probably in the late 9th or early 10th centuries. The work gives rise to numerous dilemmas, among which are various theories as to when the work was written, and the author is also unknown. Taketori Monogatari demonstrates essential characteristics of the monogatari genre, as well as the tsukuri monogatari subgenre: a detailed realistic description and a minute psychological representation of the principal characters’ thoughts and feelings. Simultaneously, many parts reveal foreign influences, primarily of Taoist thought. Certain segments of the work show the features of classical fairy tale, others show those of legend, but the psychological shading of the characters, developed dialogues and realistic and discreetly comic overtones bring it closer to the spirit of a novella.
