Summary/Abstract: The paper examines James Cone’s construction of the black cultural self inhis Black Theology of Liberation (1970). Informed by Paul Tillich’s idea of contextand correlation, Cone seeks to embed African Americans in a social/cultural contextin which they can still negotiate a rewarding and theologically validated culturalidentity.
