Summary/Abstract: The Reformed College of Sárospatak developed several fields of work in the middle of the 20 th century that go well beyond the traditional school education functions. One of them was the travelling library movement of the school that had a very important culture mission. Between 1936 and 1949 eight collection of 40 books were outplaced to villages where there was no other library and then moved to another village one year later. Considering the fact that books were often read in groups, this was the only chance for several thousands of people to obtain literature of high standard. Central cultural function of Sárospatak was strengthened by this movement. The remained borrowing documentation provides us information on the reading behaviors of the rural population of orthern Hungary in the years 1936–1950.
