Summary/Abstract: The early 1970s is part of the evolution of the scenery painting art of Moldova as a period of relevant transformations in the theatrical-decorative art. This process of changes has its beginnings in the previous decade, when stage designers have become aware of the need to review their role in setting up the play. The process of setting up Moldovan scenery painting was determined both by the whole development of Soviet theatrical art and by the emergence of young plastic artists in the field. Although there were some differences in individual peculiarities of creative interpretation, the plastic artists followed a single idea – the perception and common understanding of the basic principles of modern scenography. Namely in the 70s, the scenery painting art in Moldova enters a new stage of development, determined by the establishment of the new complicated processes, characteristic of the entire theatrical art of that period. The requirements for solving the idea of the show, the methods and the means of expression, which could not but affect the artistic creation of the scenery painters in Moldova, have changed and got more complicated. Theater artists often resort to allegory, symbolism, where an object is endowed with generalizing force and becomes the exponent of a certain idea. Significant changes have been made in organizing the stage space. The number of materials and textures applied for decoration is diversifed. Another trend in Moldovan scenery painting is the plastic organization of the scene, which successfully combines the scenic interior with the exterior. Thus, the most important processes characterizing the Soviet scenery painting of the first half of the 1970s, in one form or another, were reflected in the work of theatrical plastic artists from Moldova.
