Summary/Abstract: The article focuses firstly on the meaning of ‘caring’ in the context of Filipino migration to the United States and, secondly, how ‘proper care’ is learned, how one breaks the rules of care, and what consequences this might have. This is also a methodological contribution: drawing on studies of transnational migration, Patzer analyses how care practices are revealed through everyday encounters with immigrant and non-immigrant family-members and how it is created in a pretextual way before it can be even named and described.
