Summary/Abstract: The medieval written sources in Bohemia mention inscriptions for the first time in the early 12th century in the so called Chronica Boemorum of Cosmas of Prague: a funerary inscription and an inscription on a golden plate. Further references are to be found towards the end of the 13th century and in the 14th century. Beyond funerary inscriptions, texts mention a dedicatory inscription with a reliquary, an inscription on the foundation stone of a church, “versus doctrinales et morales“ in the courtyard of the bishop of Prague, and identificatory inscriptions on lead and copper plates in or on the coffins of the bishops of Prague. The references in narrative sources are rather seldom. Not all inscriptions cited in narrative sources existed in reality, so that in the case of some funerary inscriptions they were in fact epitaphs as literary pieces.
