Summary/Abstract: This paper is not founded on methodologically based and systematically conducted researches, but on the observations that are the result of the author’s thirty years of experience in Matica Srpska, the oldest Serbian cultural and scientific institution. The first part of the paper deals with the issues related to the editing of twelve journals published by Matica Srpska. A journal with longest tradition is Letopis, launched in 1824. Other journals cover particular scientific and artistic fields (social sciences, natural sciences, history, classical studies, performing arts and music, fine arts, literature and language, Slavic studies) and were successively established between 1950 and 1996. Their editors faced a major challenge in the past two decades when the Ministry started evaluating them by applying scientometric principles. Some journals quickly adapted to new standards, but some were slower and more resistant. The second part of the paper addresses Srpski biografski rečnik, as a capital lexicographic project. So far, six volumes have been published containing more than 10,000 biographies – ten volumes with about 20,000 biographies are envisaged. The paper also presents the methodology of work as well as complex procedures of reviewing and editing manuscripts.
