Summary/Abstract: The article aims to problematize the sex/gender division adopted by feminist scholars. Derra discusses the division’s rationale in psychology, sexology and sociology as well as its possible interpretations and historical importance. She then presents biological attempts at grasping the essence of human sexuality (pointing at chromosomes, hormones and genes). She argues that feminist theory would benefit from abandoning the sex/gender division, which is inoperable and tends to essentialize biological factors. Derra also argues that the mechanisms associated with gender effectively sustain homogenic views of femininity and masculinity.
