Summary/Abstract: Among the numerous contributions made by Chuck Goodwin to studies of interaction (Linguistic Anthropology, Conversation Analysis, Pragmatics, etc.), it is noteworthy that he paid particular attention to the use of gestures that link things in the world to embodied action and to the classification of those things in ways that are relevant to local participants. This article focuses on these ‘environmentally coupled gestures’ (Goodwin 2007) employed in the course of interactions among people having lived a nomadic lifestyle in the central part of the Kalahari Desert.
