Summary/Abstract: Dióg O’Connell, in her examination of the Irish cinema of the 21st century, looks from the perspective of changes that occurred in the Irish society over the last 50 years, as the country moved from tradition to modernity. Although the author focuses on the latest films, and thus realized after the era of the economic boom, the so called “Celtic tiger”, she also outlines the earlier stages in the history of Irish cinematography closely related to socio-economic-political changes. So in the mid-1990s, Irish film focused on the so called great trinity of themes: rural Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Catholic Ireland. After 1998, there was a change – Irish cinema was dominated by modern genre films and productions depicting Ireland as a country of urban chic. The films that were created after the era of the “Celtic tiger”, however, rejected this poetics, returning to the old themes, but treating them in a new way, particularly in terms of narrative. These new narratives were supposed to break the myth of the economic miracle and present an alternative, peripheral, often provocative experience of this time.
