Summary/Abstract: One way to achieve a smooth flow of interlocking actions through time in human interaction is for the nature and timing of each person’s move to be inextricably and necessarily contingent upon the other’s. Consider the two-person saw. As the two panels of Figure 1 show, when one man has pulled the saw all the way back, the other man is necessarily in the all-the-way-forward position, and vice versa. Smooth coordination here entails complete complementarity of action (Goodwin 2000; 2006; 2013).
