Summary/Abstract: This paper acknowledges my indebtedness to Chuck Goodwin for having introduced and elaborated the notion of co-operative semiosis, an arrangement whereby “action emerges through a process in which signs are produced to be operated on by another” (Goodwin, C. 2011: 189). The concept of co-operation is central here, referring as it does “to the way in which subsequent (as well as simultaneous) action is built by performing systematic operations on the sign complexes made publicly available by others” (Goodwin, C. 2011: 183). In the following I attempt to show that one dimension of co-operative semiosis involves the way an interlocutor’s prosody systematically ‘operates’ on the prosody of another within emerging sequences of interaction.
