Summary/Abstract: As a participant in Chuck Goodwin’s seminars and discourse labs from the years 2000 to 2004, I learned a great deal from him on how to collect, analyse, and present data on social interaction, which I have attempted to apply to my own research and teaching. These early years of the 21st century were part of a golden era for engaging in the study of language, interaction, and culture at UCLA, and Chuck’s seminars and discourse labs were an invaluable part of this era. In addition to the rich data presented by Chuck, graduate students and visiting scholars presented their data at discourse labs, which provided an opportunity to discuss and receive feedback on new data and research in progress in ways that created an engaging and dynamic atmosphere. During this time, I kept handwritten notes totalling about 75 pages. Despite moving several times across long distances, these notes moved with me and currently sit within easy reach in a binder on my bookshelf. I often return to them when I need inspiration to write up an analysis on a particular topic, such as reported speech, storytelling, directives, stance, or gesture and embodiment. They include Chuck’s comments on his and others’ data (including my own), and one-on-one discussions in Chuck’s office.
