Summary/Abstract: The article covers selected aspects of the work of non-artistic personnel in a cultural institution of high symbolic value. Its presentation of a group of theatre workers known as «usher’ or ‘ticket collectors’ is based on a study conducted using qualitative techniques. The process of becoming a theatre usher and entering the theatre environment means abandoning one»s previous perceptions of the institution. A comparison between the way ushers define themselves and the way they are seen by other theatre employees reveals that they are not perceived as members of the art world. As a consequence they do not feel part of the theatre community. The article discusses the inclusive concept of art world presented by Howard S. Becker.
