Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issue of refusal and discontinuation of treatment by a physician and the issue of patient’s resignation from health-care services. The ethical dictate causes the doctor to protect the health of the patient. The essence of the physician’s actions towards the patient is therefore immediate medical assistance at an appropriately high level. This principle was repeated in Art. 2 para. 2 of the Code of Medical Ethics which states that the greatest ethical order for a doctor is the patient’s good. The purpose of this article is to present the legal basis for refusal and discontinuation of treatment, as well as legal grounds for the patient’s resignation from health-care services. The analysis of this issue is accompanied by an attempt to answer the question whether and when they are acceptable.
