Hampel-Zattig’s Affair in Spring 1938, Its Reverberation and Consequences

Summary/Abstract: The case of injury of a German advocate Hampel-Zattig during the police intervention against a demonstration of the Konrad Henlein’s party in Opava raised a wave of interest in the media and political circles. The attack happened during chaotic and tense circumstances, in which certain police officers felt endangered by an alleged shooting. According to the investigation, everything was done according to the procedure, nevertheless, a part of Czech national party and the public interpreted this affair as a concession to the German radicals. German nationalistic press, which was relatively restrained at that time under the influence of Sudeten German Party’s programme from Karlovy Vary, did not directly criticized the police. Rumours, which emerged around the affair (and which survived indirectly through the form of denied newspaper articles), became a welcomed theme of the Czech journalism, which served as a discretisation of SdP and as an activation of the anti-propaganda of the movement.
