Spirituality and Culture in the Western Bulgarian Lands During the Revival Period

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the processes taking place in Bulgarian society during the Revival period of 18 th – 19 th century. The question of physical and spiritual freedom was of great significance to the inhabitants of the Bulgarian lands under the Ottoman Empire. Here you can read more about the prominent Renaissance figures from the Southwestern Bulgarian territories – Paisii Hilendarski and Lazar German. The paper, also, traces the influence of the ideas of freedom, education and church independence in the Northwestern Bulgarian region.
