Summary/Abstract: What made the European citizens to vote against the European Constitution? The European enlargement has also brought about fears regarding social and economic security. For its Western citizens, enlargement means also the necessity to deal with new cultural and social diversities. For the newcomers – the discovery of a Europe they did not know before. European history is a complex example from which European politicians should learn how to deal with diversity and to avoid social and ethnic conflicts.
