Processes of democratisation and Taiwanisation. On the role of education in shaping the Taiwanese national identity

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on educational transformation in Taiwan, as reflected in its ongoing social changes. The genesis and the course of two particularly important processes: democratisation and Taiwanisation are given special consideration, as they have radically been changing the face ofTaiwan’s education and appear to be paving the way for the shaping of a newTaiwanese national identity. This process can be read as “balancing” Taiwanbetween East and West – between different values and processes. While presentingtheir essence, also complex links with Taiwan’s policy towards Chinaand the orientation on economic growth are taken into account.
