The emancipation of the Gypsy slaves in Romania. The longue durée of the emancipation.

Summary/Abstract: The fate of the Gypsies, from XIX-th century documents, is different from what we assumed we knew. They were slaves - at a time when overwhelming majority of the population were serfs. 27 families of slaves are sold with a caveat ”because they are wandering about Moldavia, the buyer will pay them as they will be found. One noble asks for seven runaway slaves to be returned. The police informs him that at least one has married on another estate and has paid taxes to the state for twenty years.
