Summary/Abstract: The article presents the fundamental strategies emerging in the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands for perceiving relations between the private and ideologicalhomeland in bi– and multicultural local communities situated in the lands offormer Galicia. In Polish-Ukrainian communities it is common for the twonational groups to build their own ties with their national homeland usingelements of local culture but omitting local content that is tied to the cultureof their neighbours. This is resulting in the practice of omitting the theme ofmulticulturality in the presenting of one’s own local attachment. Another practice is very powerful orientation towards local homeland with a distinct appreciation of its multicultural character. In urban communities this is tied to areceptive attitude towards the national values of all local groups and pan-European values. In rural communities such an attitude accentuates the specialness of local ethnic relations, with a tendency to isolate themselves from thebroader surroundings, perceived as less conciliatory.Qualitative research in the Polish-Ukrainian borderlands also shows that experiencing a private homeland of which multiculturality is a significant featurenot only reinforces the image of the national homeland but could also constitute a foundation for creating European identity and building an image ofEurope as a broad ideological homeland.
