Mersin and İskenderun Ports in the Second World War

Summary/Abstract: The Second World War, emerged from the results of the first World War, started with the occupation of Poland by Germany in September 1, 1939 and became the World War in 1941. The main factor determining the Turkish policy during the Second World War was the course of the war. Statesmen controlling the Turkish foreign policy ingeniously used every possible tool to ensure Turkey’s non-belligerency. They were able to sign an alliance treaty with Britain and a friendship treaty with Germany. Britain was one of the countries closely following the Turkish foreign policy during the war. During the Second World War, Turkey followed a balance policy and maintained economic and political relations with each side. This close interest steadily increased throughout the war due to the unique geopolitical position of Turkey and the skillful utilization of this position by Turkish statesmen. As a result of Adana conference made between Britain and Turkey, the schedules of these aids were prepared and the military materials which especially enter from Mersin and İskenderun Ports were transferred to troops through railway and highway. When Mustafa Kemal Pasha visited Mersin in 1923 he emphasized the importance of Mersin as a link between the World and Trukey. This paper handled military activities in Mersin and Iskederun Ports during the second World War.
