Summary/Abstract: The impact of internet technologies and the high penetration of social media have led to a substantial growth in communication tools and significant change in people's behavior. This publication debates the role of social media and how organisations can make use of them in times of crisis. The study highlights different types of social media platforms and references scientific research literature. The aim is to determine new requirements for crisis communication experts imposed by social media like Facebook, Twitter, wikis, blogs, media sharing sites and also how these platforms can influence a rising crisis.
