Summary/Abstract: In the reign of Nicholas II, there was a novelty in the Russian army –allowed duels. Conflict situations within the corps of Guards officers were often due to the contradictions between the graduates of the Academy of General Staff officers and the officer corps. Diary entries of V. S. Savonko for 1903–1904 are able to trace the conflict situations, which should have been completed duel among Guard officers. One of dueling stories associated with the name of the outstanding artillery officer, practitioner and theorist, the constructor who has made a significant contribution to the development of Russian artillery, mortar inventor, a hero of the Russian-Japanese and World War I Leonid Nikolaevich Gobyato.
