Summary/Abstract: The article traces the genesis and development of the phenomenon “suitcase trade” among members of the Roma communities, covering a timeframe from the end of the last century to the present day. Much of the field data was collected thanks to the cooperation of “suitcase traders” from the ethnic neighbourhoods in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The ar¬ticle has the aim of providing an answer to a few main questions: what is the “suitcase trade”; who are the people involved in this practice, what kind of goods are trafficked, how this trade is carried out, etc.
