Summary/Abstract: The author makes an effort to propose an analytical approach to Jadwiga Domuntówna, one of the characters of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s classic novel Nad Niemnem (1887). Miss Domunt has by this far been mainly considered as a rival to Justyna Orzelska, an obstacle in her love to Jan Bohatyrowicz. However, surrounded in the text by a number of significant symbols, Jadwiga reveals an entirely different face once our reading of the novel becomes more penetrating: compared against the mythical Ceres, she becomes an individual-sign, a trace of presence of Goddess-the-Mother in this Niemen-river-area epopee. It is through this character that female body and the sphere of senses and eroticism become revalorised – in a world where nature is sacralised
