UN MAUSOLEU DESCOPERIT RECENT ŞI PROBLEMA EXISTENŢEI UNOR ASEMENEA CONSTRUCŢII LA APULUM
A RECENTLY DISCOVERED MAUSOLEUM AND THE TOPIC OF EXISTENCE OF SOME FUNERARY BUILDINGS AT APULUM

Summary/Abstract: This study references a find from 2013 that was yielded at Alba Iulia prior the upgrade works carried out at the Water Treatment Station, lying ca. 350 m west the municipium Aurelium/colonia Aurelia (the Roman date finds from Dacilor street). In the occasion, a mausoleum type building was partially investigated, in whose funerary chamber were discovered two marble sarcophagi. The building was partially destroyed by the works commenced without any archaeological assistance. Noticeably, it was sized 11.1 X 6.5m flat and had a central funerary chamber of 3.3 X 4.5 m. Archaeologically, a gravel bed, which represented the construction’s foundation, identified on the western profile on 1m height, was noted. Beneath lay a network of postholes, “reinforcing” the gravel layer. The building was looted several times, despoiled of the limestone making up its upper side, but also of the plating marble. Entrance elements were reused in the sarcophagus of an inhumation found a few meters to the north. Based on parallels, we assume that the discovered mausoleum was rectangular in shape, with the entrance set on the southern side, positioned by the road entering Apulum on the west side. It was built on a land in the property of a financially well off family, in order to properly honour some of its departed members.
