Summary/Abstract: In recent discussions of international affairs philosophical attacks are aimed against the sceptical claim that there are no objective moral principles that can or should be applied to actions in the international arena. Such scepticism is paired with political »realism« — the view that power is or should be the determiner of what is right in international affairs. In contemporary discussion, this view is associated with political thinkers like Aron, Kennan, Morgenthau and Niebuhr. In answer to philosophers who have taken issue with such views, among them Walzer, Brunk and Cohen, the author of the present article argues that scepticism and realism can be the basis of a promising attempt to achieve and sustain international peace. The problems with realism call for amending rather than rejecting. The key to the amendments that the author proposes is a richer notion of scepticism — one which can be distilled from the history of philosophy.
