On the first steps and great strides: A tribute to the pioneers

Summary/Abstract: The paper makes the retrospectives of and prospects for Bulgarian ethnomusicology in the early years of the institution a focus of attention, delving deep in the role of the pioneers Raina Katsarova (1901 – 1984), Ivan Kachulev (1905 – 1989) and Elena Stoin (1915 – 2012). An attempt has been made to interpret today’s measuring up to them and the prospects for Bulgarian ethnomusicology against a backdrop of a long-term periodisation of the studies of Bulgarian traditional music through bringing forth personal contributions.
