Summary/Abstract: Vasily Vereshchagin was perhaps the most famous foreign student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and contemporaries often compared Vereshchagin with Gérôme. However, art historians have only relatively recently started to study in details the impact of Gérôme to Vereshchagin’s work. And here their interest has not yet gone beyond Orientalist painting of Gérôme and Vereshchagin. In this article I intend to consider how Vereshchagin accepted and developed the innovative achievements of Gérôme in representation of historical event. I will focus on the comparative analysis of several paintings, paying particular attention to two of them – “The Death of Marshal Ney” by Gérôme and “Shipka-Sheinovo” by Vereshchagin. What is the structure of the new formula to represent historical event? How the formula was been varied and modified in different paintings? What is the understanding of history which it carries in itself? – The answers to these questions are suggested in my article.
