Summary/Abstract: Palestine is the homeland of an ancient community located at the geopolitic, geoeconomic and geocultural crossroads of the Middle East, a region that has long been a bone of contention in the global power struggle. Although relatively prosperous during long stretches of Ottoman rule, after the imperial disintegration Palestine has found itself subjected to political, military and economic violence from the early twentieth century until today. Israel’s relentless and multi-faceted policy o f pressure and blockade has come to threaten the sustainability of the Palestinian society even at the basic level of sustenance. It has also led to a fragmentation of the Palestinian territories and prevented the establishment of an institutional state structure. Since Palestine is a sui generis country with no territorial contiguity, standard prescriptions for economic development are considered to be less useful than an integrated process of development. Such a process would involve the establishment of a sound basis for economic institutions through the reconstruction of the fragmented political and social institutions.
