CERAMIC LAMPS IN MOSQUE OF THE OTTOMAN PERIOD

Summary/Abstract: Lamp is a vehicle that has existed since human beings began to use fire for lighting. There are as many different forms and materials as everyday. In addition to the first examples made from the ceramics, there are also those made later by glass and mine. Mosque lamps of Ottoman period are generally produced as Turkish tiles. It is the objects that reflect the period’s art of decorative decoration. They are located in front of mihrab in mosque. They are suspended in groups with chains to illuminate the mosque and provide acoustics due to the sound reflection feature of the ceramic. In this study, the tile mosque lamps, which have a different place in the Ottoman ceramics, were firstly described in terms of period characteristics and then studied in terms of decoration and shape of lamps. Lamps are classified as classification made in Blue-white technique and Multicolor underglaza technique, and grouped according to shape differences under these classification.
