Summary/Abstract: Formal relations between Turkey and the EU go back to 1963, when a treaty of association was signed. Over the years, Turkey has gained considerable importance for the economic and security policy of the EU, without managing to bridge the gap towards political integration into the European system of states. Since 1999, when Turkey became a candidate for EU-membership, this situation has been rapidly changing, for the first time with a realistic perspective to fulfil the Copenhagen criteria. The article argues that, if the criteria were fulfilled, the European integration of Turkey could be managed. Nevertheless, the financial problem of integration may prove the gravest obstacle.
