Summary/Abstract: The research was conducted on the sample of eleven students who have just been enrolled in the first grade of the secondary vocational school. The purpose and the main intention of the test was to test the knowledge of the German language in the population who completed their elementary school education. The obtained level of the lexical and grammatical competence after elementary education was the main goal of the research. The analysis of the test results led to the conclusion that the students came from elementary school with surprisingly poor knowledge of the language, especially when it comes to grammar. It is interesting to observe that even though many elementary school students came to the high school with excellent grades, the initial test results showed a completely different situation. It can be presumed that the observed deficiencies might cause further difficulties in learning the German language in high school, and consequently, a poorer motivation due to insufficient grammatical and lexical competence.
