Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on how the staging of mediatized body images in contemporary theatre calls our attention to the changing concepts of theatrical presence and to the mediated nature of perception. Therefore I investigate the theatrical representation of violence in "Hard To Be a God" ("Nehéz istennek lenni"), a 2010 piece by the Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó. The production shows how violence against female bodies is mediatized through the medium of film, as a consequence of which theatrical bodies are being replaced by close-ups of suffering. The emphasis on violent film images also indicates questions about the position of spectators in theatre.
