Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the problem of child's sex pre-selection. The most important motives of such a choice are parents' preferences and the protection of the child against diseases usually associated with the particular gender. Basically, there are two types of methods that increase the chances of having a child of particular sex: natural methods related to the moment of fertilization and artificial methods based on the selection of male gametes with an appropriate sex chromosome and the use of artificial procreation. The author positively assesses natural methods motivated by the child's health or welfare, but he negatively evaluates the sex pre-selection using artificial methods and motivated by the interest of others (parents, human society, socio-political structures).
