Summary/Abstract: This paper evaluates the structuralist movement’s early (1945-1966) approaches to media and ideology. It discusses the intellectual development and some of the first applications of methods in the works of Louis Althusser and Roland Barthes as they ask whether it is possible for persons to escape ideology.
