Summary/Abstract: Community has been one of the themes attracting the social science circle fordecades. In particular, "Community spirit" is a concept that has long been discussed by sociologists in Western Countries. This concept has its roots in theclassical works of Durkheim, Weber and Parsons. It was discussed in detail inthe works of Tonnies (1887) and Nisbet (1966). While Western scholars oftenconsider the community spirit in dynamic statuses, Vietnams researchers tendto explain community spirit in static situations, and link community spirit withthe existence and identity of each village, characterised by sensuousness andautonomy. Based on survey data from the research project Impacts of thesocial network on the economic development of households in rural areas ofVietnam (a survey covering two communes in the Red River Delta), the article analyses some new dynamics of the rural community spirit in two communes: Lien Bao and Ninh Hiep in the Red River Delta, in the context oftransition and integration in Vietnams rural areas.
